Know to the local Inuit as the Crystal Eye of Nunavik, the Pingualuit crater is a nearly perfectly round impact crater in Northern Quebec formed over 1.4 million years ago.
It is one of the most transparent lakes in the world. Measuring 3.4 km across the crater is nearly the depth of Lake Superior.
From across the globe, scientists are fascinated with it, calling it a ‘time machine’; they believe the sediment under the pristine water holds clues to the history of climate change and possible keys to forecasting future weather.
